GAMEIRO

NUNO

INTERVIEW

ABOUT THE ARTIST | ORIGINAL ARTWORKS

Gameiro Nuno

Visual Artist from Lisbon, Portugal.

Born in Lisbon in 1992, the artist attended the painting course of Lisbon's Fine Arts University, and completed a painting course at the AR.CO arts school in Lisbon.

Entering into
the Fine Arts University stimulated the artist’s creative processes and techniques, which allowed him to best express himself. The focus of painting was always, for him, to express the deeper layers of what Freud called the "Unconscious Mind".

Throughout this week we presented the work of Gameiro Nuno. 7% of his collection is donated to “APAV"
.

Gameiro, let's start with: who are you and what do you do?

"I am an integrated (and sometimes disintegrated) being part of a whole. Someone who is privileged everyday with more self-understanding, to be able to live more authentically and more enlightened. Also to live more compassionately with the world around us. Through creative practice - from painting to writing - I express my experiences, emotions, blockages, impulses and desires. I am an artist that uses art as a means to communicate to the world, and before that, to myself."

How do you work?

"I work primarily through impulse. It is very rare for any of my artwork not to begin with an impulse. Instinct is what drives my work, being that the first moments of each drawing/painting are usually chaotic and just raw potential, waiting for polishing, subtracting, unveiling"

How has your practice changed over time?

"I started my artistic career with graffiti, urban art. I painted letters, marked territory so to speak. But, more than anything else, I felt the pleasure of colouring, the beauty of colour. Soon I began to feel the need to extend my limits, to explore my creativity beyond the letters and pseudonyms signed on walls. Contact with visual artists and friends who were studying at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, undoubtedly stimulated me to seek something deeper in my creative expression."

Is there any particular message you want to send with your work?

"Quite often it happens to me, for example in my figurative paintings, that people are drawn to my work because they identify with the emotion that the figure in question expresses. The message is stamped on the faces of the figures I draw, in their gestures and movements. And I see that people are attracted to the paintings that are in most resonance with what they feel. My work is maybe 70 percent about the interactions between myself and other people, so I assume that the quest to have healthy social relationships is a very important message in my art."

What is your dream project?

"To paint my art in large scale (like in buildings' walls, in city centers). My greatest wish is to be able to paint around the world, whether it is mural painting or exhibiting in art galleries, or drawing a portrait of a member of an indigenous community. The idea of unification between all people is something that captivates me and is something to which I try to contribute on a daily basis. Therefore, exhibiting and painting around the world, absorbing the culture of other places, is one of my greatest desires."

What role does the artist have in society?

"The artist can be an educator and someone who provokes society, who incites it to see beyond the obvious, which is so often limiting and oppressive. Society survives on productivity, but it lives on what is immaterial and magical. The artist can bring the light that is so necessary for the whole."

The NGO you have chosen to help with the sale of your works is "APAV". Why is that? Do you have any final support message for them and a call to action for people?

"In our social interactions, how many times do we regret to have already hurt someone? Not only from the point of view of physical aggression, which is, unfortunately, also a reality but also from the verbal and emotional point of view. If I can contribute for an improvement in this sense, I feel that it is a useful contribution to society."

What do you think about the art2act® project? How do you think it can help the development of your artistic career?

"The art2act project is a tremendous opportunity for new artists to gain space and play an active role in society. It is an initiative that brings hope to those who want to make a living through art. It is a project for which I feel gratitude and admiration. It has already helped me to become more professional as an artist and to reach more people who appreciate and are interested in art, something I found difficult to establish along with my artistic career."
